Lush groundcover from redwood forests and mixed evergreen woodlands. Likes deep shade, with aromatic leaves and intriguing red flowers like orchids, usually hidden beneath leaves. Native to greater Bay Area. The Indians used these roots as a soothing digestive tea, similar to common ginger.
