Aralia


A striking 3- to 9-ft. deciduous shrub for moist and shaded areas, elk clover grows Jurassic leaves more than three feet long and blooms in a bold galaxy of white star-shaped flowers that draw droves of hungry butterflies. Native to the greater Bay Area, this is the only California native in the Ginseng family. The root was used by Native Americans topically for skin ailments.
