Arctostaphylos auriculata


This handsome manzanita is a study in paradox: rugged leaves that feel like velvet, and a trunk of gnarled red branches like an architectural fractal. An endemic treasure of the East Bay, this species grows wild on Mount Diablo and no place else on earth.
