Eleocharis macrostachya

Pale Spikerush

The Pale Spikerush, AKA Common Spikerush, Creeping Spike Rush, Wire Grass is a wetland species from the edges of freshwater lakes, brackish marshes and ponds, ditches, vernal pools, and wet meadows. It can grow as tall as 4-foot six inches. Creeping spikerush has a moderately high protein content in the spring and good digestibility. The tops are heavily grazed by both livestock and big game animals, especially after the seeds have ripened. It produces nesting cover for waterfowl and ducks eat the seeds and geese graze the shoots.
