Gaultheria shallon
Elegant groundcover or low shrub for partial shade, salal has luscious green leaves ringed with a hint of red, and the deep red branches so distinctive in the Erica family, with the same fine clusters of gorgeous urn-shaped blossoms one finds on manzanita and madrone. Salal grows wild on Mount Davidson (San Francisco) and in coastal conditions from Santa Barbara to Alaska.
