Distichlis spicata  Salt Grass  San Francisco
Looks and acts like Bermuda Grass with vigorous spreading rhizomes. Tolerates foot traffic, salt water and fresh water innundation, clay and probably dog pee. The strongly pattered leaves are eye catching.

A densely tufted perennial bunchgrass with luscious new growth in spring leading to gorgeous silvery inflorescence. Good for erosion control and once an important forage for elk (but most good native stands now wiped out by overgrazing).

The official state grass (and formerly known to old-school native plant aficionados as Stipa pulchra), purple needlegrass is a wild and wooly bunchgrass suitable for meadows and pastures. The long purple florets look lovely swaying in the breeze, but don't plant them too near a path, where they will likely flop over and block traffic.
